Analytical Writing Assessment Section

This post enlists some general 'to note' points in context with GRE Analytical Writing Assessment Section.











  • Do not neglect this section. A score of 3+ is a must requirement for many colleges. And, if you writing GRE for admission into a phd course, you should aim for a minimum of 4 in AWA.
  • This is the first section, that you will encounter while writing your actual GRE exam.
  • You are suppose to write two essay, each in 30 min.
  • ISSUE ESSAY followed by ARGUMENT ESSAY.
  • Each essay is scored on a 0-6 scale.
  • You will write two essay back to back in 60 min, with no breaks.
  • With no spell check and grammar check. So, make sure from today you start writing in notepad and copy it back to word to check your mistakes. And yes, mistakes will be their specially if you writing in hurry.
  • There are essay pool for both issue and argument essay, that can be checked on ets website, because the topics on which essays are asked will be from these pool only
  • If you have any problem with the question pool, you can always discuss here.
  • Each essay is graded twice, once by human reader and once by computer. An average of all four scores will be your GRE AWA score.

  • I also plan to add a post for essay pool for both issue and argument section.
